For the far right, jokes are a common way to conceal and propagate their real beliefs. Any pushback can be dismissed with “it’s just a joke” and anyone else on the far right is signaled “oh this person agrees with me”

At one point in the conversation, I point blank asked him to condemn Hitler and he refused to do it. Can’t believe I was friends with that guy for so long.
