Hot take: You can’t force people to overthrow their own government. It happens when the people have reached the point of no return on their own.

I don’t get why the US thinks we can get Iranians to overthrow their own government just by taking out the leader. That’d by like another gov taking out Trump and then expecting us to be more worried about Vance than an incoming invasion

The Iranians were practically in open revolt in December/January, but the IRGC shut the internet down and started gunning down the protesters. In fact, protesters specifically appealed to Trump and the US on multiple occasions. He’s just trying to keep that momentum going.

#1 is right, Iranians reached that point LONG ago but their government is absolutely brutal and kills its own civilians by the tens of thousands if they so much as protest. The regime is too powerful for the people to bring down on their own— they needed a powerful adversary to blow it up and give them an opening

Along the same lines, the Lebanese government (and most of the people) have been wanting to get rid of Hezbollah for ages but Hezbollah was too strong. Now that Hezbollah’s biggest backer is in crisis, the Lebanese government is taking the opportunity to be much more forceful
