I wouldn’t be in favor of higher taxes for everyone, go tax the billionaires extra instead of making regular ass people carry the burden

This would lead to massively underfunding necessary services and massively overfunding wanted services. Parks and recreation gonna be installing theme parks while your transit infrastructure crumbles and people become homeless

I would 100% support higher taxes if I can opt in and out for what my money goes towards. I’m not against government spending just against bad government spending

Actually, this is how it’s supposed to work. Congresspeople are supposed to allocate the budget based on the needs and wants of their constituents.

I genuinely think this is something that would get massive bipartisan support from voters, although the politicians prolly won’t like it bc it gives some of their appropriation powers to voters

This isn’t to say we should be far more aware of where tax money is going, but if you give the whole population a choice of where their money goes, it will always go to what benefits them directly instead of what benefits society.

Nah yeah it’d need worked a bit before implementing. Something like a minimum % of tax dollars gets distributed to programs as congressionally directed, and the rest is discretionary. It’d probably require a net raise in tax rates to offset lower discretionary funding to critical programs that aren’t as public facing

I’m hoping that if this is possible, that we could close a lot of the debt loopholes and actually give billionaires an incentive to want to pay taxes, if they have an ability to say “fund this program” without needing to bribe an elected or appointed official

I mean that sounds more reasonable. But like… we just need to stop giving billion dollar companies tax breaks because they “create” low paying terrible jobs by shutting out local businesses
