What’s stopping a president or governor from just saying “anyone who attempts to assassinate whoever is running against me will be pardoned” to create an unopposed election?
The fact that the assassin can still be charged by the state the crime is committed in

Shit. That’s a good point. I guess those states usually aren’t worth campaigning in though. States that give the governor exclusive pardon power and elect a governor that’s willing to pardon someone for attempted murder are probably lost causes
