people just feel relieved because they now have an answer to their questions, such as the way they act in social situations. some part of me does feel like autism is getting over diagnosed. i think some people refuse to believe that human behavior and personality is widely varied so they want to know why they don’t behave within the bounds of what they think is normal. nevertheless i am not a psychologist so i could be wrong.
The reason we feel relieved when we’re diagnosed is because, for most of us who are low support needs, we knew we were different and struggled all our lives for no apparent reason. Many of us were mercilessly bullied for simply being a little different in a way everyone else could pick up on. Many of us thought we were stupid, that there was something inherently /wrong/ with us rather than just different because why else would we struggle in the ways that we did? Why else would the world around-
-us mock and hurt us the way it did? By getting that diagnosis, it provides an answer that isn’t just “you’re a freak that no one likes”. It automatically lets you know you’re not alone because there are so many other autistic people out there. It gives you access to accommodations in most schools and in workplaces so that you can function to the same degree as everyone else
