Sure but you also tend to have this innate understanding of when a group of people are behaving ritualistically in a way that’s incongruent with your sense of reality, and this will scare you as a kid even if you don’t necessarily know what a cult is.

Idk if I necessarily buy that tbh, I think all humans are ritualistic in varying capacities and forms. What is a ritual? What is worship? Even atheist moderns are ritualistic in their habits and group participation of some kind. Not all religion is theistic. These terms are rather muddied with historical baggage in the western conception imo

I mean you don’t have to buy it ig but it literally happened to me. My parents never actually explained religion to me until I was fairly old. They just never brought it up.

Oh ok well in that case thanks for sharing your own perspective man, I personally didn’t rly decide to actually believe in religion till like high school. I remember thinking religions were cults for a bit, but that thought didn’t rly come up till like middle school and was more learned, I didn’t have that view personally as a younger kid. I think religions can def have internal cults and cult behavior though, at their root ppl seek meaning/purpose and that can get easily hijacked
