Not true. Solarpunk's whole point is that tech doesn't have to come from them. A used ThinkPad with Linux beats most new budget laptops for ~$100. Used GPUs, Raspberry Pis, self-hosting, right-to-repair, repair cafes, open hardware: every device we keep alive is one less sale. Their model runs on planned obsolescence and subscriptions. Fix it, flash it, share it. DIY is their kryptonite.
True, Micron is cashing in right now. But who's paying them? AI labs burning billions, propped up by circular deals where Nvidia invests in OpenAI so OpenAI can buy Nvidia chips. Memory has always been boom-bust, and this boom runs on money that isn't profitable yet. When it corrects, data centers dump hardware and RAM floods the market. Meanwhile open-weight models already run on local GPUs. Self-hosted AI is the antidote.
