I mean it’s worth noting that Zionism was already a movement prior to World War Two. There was already large-scale settlement in Palestine at that point, and Zionist militias were fighting against the British to try to make them withdraw from Palestine and let them take over. We shouldn’t remove the agency from them.
To take this reading you kind of have to ignore history before 1973 when we were very deliberately distancing ourselves from Israel to try to avoid pissing off the Arabs so we could keep buying their oil, and also avoid driving them under Soviet influence. We only began supporting Israel in the first place because a lot of Arab states aligned with the Soviets eventually anyways and were supplied by them for the Yom Kippur War. Also as #3 points out.
