Is “centr*st” a slur now?

At present, with the copious polarization in this country, yes. That said, centrists sitting on the fence give way too much oxygen to an administration that doesn’t repudiate the open support from neonazis. Trump saying “good people on both sides” about the Unite The Right rallies was the end of centrism as a credible stance.

Tbh idk how you can even call yourself centrist when the spectrum is 0-1

The thing uniting the Right that day was people wearing shirts that said “gas k*kes” and “six million wasn’t enough.” That is not something anyone with basic decency should handwave away.

centrist doesn’t always mean the same thing as fence sitter, it’s often just the name assigned to being independent. maybe we need new terms idk

That’s not true at all, I’m a raging radical leftist but also registered independent

For full transparency on my part, I have voted Democrat since 2016 but have always been registered Independent. Even back then, I found the DNC corporatism to be incredibly tone-deaf.

I don’t mean registered independent, more so not closely aligned with either party or even with left/right in the traditional sense

You are right about my conflation with centrist and fence-sitter. There’s a lot more nuance to being undecided or registered independent.

for example I supported Trump during his first term, Bernie in the 2020 primaries, RFK Jr. during the early stages of this election but ended up voting for Kamala throughout this my views haven’t really shifted massively and the wide spread wasn’t a result of “we should meet in the middle” or fence sitting, but often I’m not sure how to describe this other than radical centrist or something lol

I think you’re very validly confused, I say that with sensitivity. But rather, you seem to look critically at what would be objectively better personally and go for it. Most important, you are willing to change your mind about things.

pretty much, when voting I definitely focus more on what the broader, long-term outcomes might be rather than what someone’s immediate goals or alliances are
