lol I think it’s more of that you are closer with a group that you do hard stuff together with. This is true and has been studied over and over again; overcoming adversity with a group forms a closer bond. Not saying I agree with hazing, but that’s the mentality behind a lot of it.

Yeah I’m just saying it’s artificial hardship, coming up with wacky bs to torture each other so you can feel like you worked through something difficult with a group. Different from organic struggles like you have with coworkers or fellow athletes on a team or fellow soldiers in a conflict or something like that

you find that in a lot of rituals that transition social status. i think all the ones you listed can have them but it’s most common in the military (during training usually)
