There’s a myth in the South pushed since after the civil war, where they’ve been saying that the confederacy was about states’ rights and liberty rather than about wanting to own slaves. It’s called the “lost cause”

One of my favorite things about the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond is that it plainly lays out the lost cause as a myth and does not mince words. Very good to have that in the old confederate capital.

It’s basically propaganda attempting to rewrite history in order to keep the confederacy alive and return to black people being legally inferior to white people

The united daughters of the confederacy went absolutely wild on this front, even infiltrating libraries and schools to ensure curriculums and publicly available books were curated to their propaganda and goals. while I know yall are likely versed in this topic, it’s worth a read for any lurking viewers!

(post-civil war I might add; they picked up the mantle after the confederacy lost the war and are the primary reason as to why so many of those confederate traitors ended up with statues….)
