I mean the reality is that the American obsession with firearms and self defense was developed within a settler colonial framework. Firearm rights were intended to defend against the British, theoretical slave revolts, and native Americans. It was not intended to be used by marginalized populations for their own interests.
Settler colonial countries tend to have a strong firearm culture and this obsession with self defense, because they constantly fear that the people they are oppressing might revolt. This was easily viewed in Rhodesia, in South Africa, in Australia, and it’s currently visible in Israel.
A lot of US states explicitly banned black people from owning firearms because then they might be able to defend themselves against racist violence. I feel like for many people it’s not even a genuine belief in self defense as a principle. It’s a desire for punishment of a “criminal” who they often picture as black. It’s why they simultaneously go on and on about “defending from a tyrannical government” but glorify and defend police violence
