
It is not fundamentally evil, but must be constrained in certain ways to ensure public benefit. I generally like the free-market and am not a Socialist or Communist, but obviously we need some regulation. Even Communist states like China and Vietnam allow certain aspects of a market economy. And even if you are a Marxist, it is likely that we have not advanced sufficiently to allow for the transition away from all elements of a market system (requiring a period of Socialist Market Economy).
