for context jewish culture strongly encourages debate, discussion, and diverging opinions so there is a lot of debate in hebrew schools. for someone to be thought of as a contrarian in the context of hebrew school means they were saying things that were wayyyyyyy out there, probably offensive, and likely insincere/trolling

Like a smaller religious education thing on the side of normal school that lets you learn about religion and meet people your age I mean.

exactly. i learned the hebrew alphabet, a bunch of prayers, and we talked about torah stories and how to be ethical people. i mostly remember i had a big crush on one of my hebrew school classmates in middle school, i thought it was kind of boring, and sometimes they had really good snacks but other times really bad snacks
