i say this more because youll see so many online profiles with pfps of roman busts or statues and that sort of stuff. its this "aesthetic" that i cant quite articulate but the people engaging with it, as far as ive noticed, are really into supremacist concepts, looksmaxxing, and all that weird shit. its just hard for me to not see a connection between them.

I can talk about this. So, the infatuation with Rome in general among people in countries that were formerly part of Rome has been on literally since Rome. The alt-right stuff is really sad, I think it has to do with them appropriating Roman aesthetic because they perceive Rome as a “white civilization” (even though Rome was multicultural, had brown skinned Emperors, and their understanding of race was completely different). You see the exact same stuff with Norse, Celtic, and Greek stuff too.

I think when we talk about Nazi-Rome connections it’s important to note specifically that fascism was first developed in Italy, where it was explicitly modeled as a revival of Roman power. The word fascism comes from the fasces, a Roman symbol. The “Nazi salute” comes from Italian use of the Roman salute, a gesture which was at the time associated with Ancient Rome (not that the Romans actually did it).

I always thought the Roman aesthetic was pretty cool (not my favorite but it was alright) I feel I’ll never truly understand the obsession with Rome in the modern consciousness.

as far as ive been reading, the nazis claimed romans as aryans. hitler and others were apparently admirers of rome. im not saying they were inspired by the roman societal structure necessarily, but more the supremacy that rome exerted over so much area and for so long, the aesthetics of its supremacy and such.

No actually Roman’s were not an ethnic group the Roman Empire had all of Italy, France, Balkans, Turkey, and even parts of North Africa, he did not claim they were aryans, the only admiration of Rome was because of its vast land and power, most leaders of the time admired it

I should clarify, I think having an interest in the Roman Empire is fine, it just always fascinates me who many MORE people are obsessed with Rome as opposed to every other civilization.

I’m big on Native American history myself. But I think for Rome, part of it is how significant it is in the origin and identity of modern western societies, and part of it is how much great written documentation we have from Roman times.
