My contribution to the ongoing “being a parent today is selfish” conversation— It’s equally (if not more selfish) to be childfree, but unwilling to be a member of your community. My friend’s, neighbors, and sibling’s kids are MY responsibility too.

i genuinely believe that the best way to have a positive impact on the future is to raise good and happy kids. they don’t have to be your kids either just any kid you can positively influence

I feel like I hear more of “not having a child is selfish” from that you’re just living for yourself then bs prospective, but also I’m sure this exists too

I genuinely yearn for the days when I’d walk over to my elderly neighbor’s house for apple juice, cookies and to play with her yappy dogs. She taught me so much about life. Or doing yardwork in my neighbor’s lawn when he was going through chemo. Or the Walgreens cashier who knew my name and always let me have a new pack of gum for free in middle school. Now I live in a three-flat and don’t even know what my neighbors LOOK like 😭

It’s been a whole social media moment for a couple of months, and has had a resurgence this week.

I guess my algorithm didn’t think I’d like it or something bc I’ll admit I’m pretty chronically online and don’t see that

The one thing I miss about my old job was getting to interact with people all day and know I was helping them and getting to know them. I still get to do that to a smaller degree, but not with the whole community I’m in. But at least there are still plenty of things I can do :)
