…no, from my liberal heart no. Way too many people there are US citizens and follow a US identity, it’s not moral to not let them have a say in this. Granted Hawaii would likely agree for independence and honestly they deserve it. But the us and Mexican territory thing is stupid considering it wasn’t even mexicos to begin with and the us has had it longer.

We can start respecting the treaties we made with indigenous nations but unless you’re willing to just up and leave and go to your ancestral land (which, how far back does that even really count? All land was “stolen” at some point or another. Are we all just supposed to go back to Africa since our species originated there?) and give your house to indigenous people you’re just being performative

It is central to democratic principles that we let the current inhabitants of regions choose their destiny rather than what country had dibs 200 years ago (and not even that, in the case of Alaska)
