I hate inconsistent atheists. You can’t claim atheism and then believe in ghosts, astrology, soulmates or anything else that is inherently supernatural. If you simply don’t believe in a monotheistic god, say that, but you’re not an atheist.

I mean technically speaking atheist just refers to the god part. It does not have any bearing on any other supernatural claims. I think atheists *should* not believe in those other supernatural claims. But the word atheist specifically is only about not believing in a god

that’s just agnosticism and most people who call themselves atheists probably just don’t know the term “agnostic” bc they don’t care enough about it

internet atheists are so funny. you live in such a bubble, i’d recommend you actually research and get into scientific communities and interact with more people, study more sociology, ect. scientism (as you are displaying) is very unhealthy for scientific thought. also to me it seems more like your concerned with gatekeeping your title over anything else. i wish luck to you on your journey.

As an atheist, I agree. I don’t understand (rightfully) rejecting the idea of an unfalsifiable supernatural being and then believing in falsifiable, debunked ideas like astrology or anything supernatural.

What would be the correct term for someone who fits this description then? Atheist just seems like the best option

Idk, person who is correct? Like I think if someone uses the word “atheist” specifically rather than “agnostic” or “non-religious” they most likely also don’t believe in the other supernatural clams. I just don’t know if there’s a specific term given that atheist is technically just about gods.

if you’re referring to my claim that nothing supernatural exists, that absolutely is not agnosticism. no one in this situation is agnostic

no, i am more of a naturalist or skeptic than. did some research on these terms and scientism refers to the belief science is the only source of knowledge. nobody said science answers every question, i just see no good reason to believe supernatural claims.

my issue is that your not actually interested in disproving these supernatural claims, nor do you have a motive to, thus all your doing is invalidating an entire field of thought just because it contradicts yours in a shallow way. thats not direct scientism but it’s indicative of it, i definitely don’t mean to come off aggressive i just truly believe you have a long journey ahead of you in terms of belief if you truly choose to go down the route of metacognition. that’s absolutely not a bad -

-thing at all, and your already in a pretty good place to be questioning deeply held values, keep doing so! just don’t forget to do the same for your own values

yeah i was referring to the people who call themselves atheist but do believe in supernatural. my understanding is that agnosticism is the belief in a higher power but no religious practice/text.
