Okay can someone explain the debt ceiling/ what happens if we just ignore it like we’ve been seemingly doing for decades?

The debt ceiling is a formality. It is used as a way to hold up legislation with spending that has already been authorized by Congress.

It’s left over from a bill that Congress passed to finance our participation in world war 1
