Mamdani himself uses left wing populist label. They’re mirroring Claudia Sheinbaum and MORENA in Mexico. They aren’t event liberals, which is what “progressive” references; i.e. “progressive liberal.” They’re populists. Their whole backbone is anti-establishment rhetoric. That is populism 101

They never had the progressive label. Being for gay marriage and nothing else isn’t really progressive but I mean, it’s in a similar ilk. Bc I won’t defend the progressive label. In contemporary politics it’s absolutely liberals that question very little economically and focus way too much on specific marquee social issues
