If you’re “threatened” by states near you entering a defensive alliance, that means you planned to attack them. And guess what? If you’re trying to stop a country from joining NATO you *dont* need to try to annex it. That’s just Russia being imperialist. Same thing they did in Georgia.
Where you wanna start in history? Specifically to Agitate? Cold War era politics and fear of an expanding Soviet State and their suppression of actual revolutionary movements. It was an alliance to create a collective security between independent states in Western Europe. Defensive in nature. Again, Russian Funded Militias. 😭
You interpret the expansion of a defensive alliance into the general facility as aggression? Gee I wonder why Ukraine and Georgia feel afraid of getting invaded hmm. Do you view soviet support for socialist governments in the Americas as a form of aggression? Would a Bay of Pigs on steroids be a valid “defensive act” in your mind? You claim to support self determination until Ukrainians decide they don’t want to align with Russia anymore.
I should point out that, unlike the USSR, Russia could have been on track to NATO membership eventually. They were part of the Partnership for Peace program and had a joint NATO-Russia council for cooperation. Putin was interested in membership in early 2000s. Obviously, this didn’t pan out, and relations worsened when Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014. But, like, it wouldn’t have been impossible.
The war was ultimately caused by multiple factors, and the potential expansion of NATO to include Ukraine is one of them. Russia wanted a “buffer state” between them and NATO. But at the same time, however, the war was caused by other factors too- Internal Russian politics meant Putin wanted a rally around the flag effect from the war, and he also had his own personal ambitions. And considering Russia’s actions, Ukraine was probably correct to seek membership in NATO!
