I think it partly has to do with their histories. Europe has been densely populated for centuries, so their society has adjusted to life without constant growth and settlement expansion. Their cities are designed to accommodate a more modest life. But in America, we live in a hypercapitalist idea of constant growth and expansion, as if we are still in the frontier days. We don’t construct our infrastructure in a way that lets people just exist comfortably where they are.
