This is why the right is trying so hard to push the agenda that the people they don’t like are criminals, because they know it’s easy to demonize criminals.
Prisoners of any kind deserve rights and fair treatment most of all no matter how heinous. The moment we start demonizing them and taking their rights, we give an opening for people to start labeling anyone as a “criminal” so they can strip them of rights

It’s easy to demonize criminals because they do evil shit. “Woah woah woah, stop demonizing the rapists and murderers, you don’t know what they might be going through” Fuck outta here.

Up to half of the people in prison are there for non-violent crimes. Also, it’s estimated 2-10% of people in prison are innocent. But because they all wear that moniker of prisoner they are treated the same. It’s never that simple and you’re literally proving my point because you’re compartmenting all criminals with rapists and murderers

I mean I think victimless crimes shouldn’t be considered crimes. But there’s a lot of nonviolent crimes that are absolutely worthy of demonization. Thievery isn’t violent, but it sure is evil. Being a smack dealer isn’t a violent crime, but the average smack dealer probably kills more people than the average murderer. Criminals are very easy to demonize because crime harms people. Plain and simple. I don’t think victimless crimes are crimes at all, but actual crimes deserve demonization.

It’s never that simple. And the underlying issue still exists. If we demonize criminals, the definition of criminal can be changed, making it easy for those in power to demonize the opposition.

Yeah, and you gotta call that shit out when they start calling people who aren’t actually criminals “criminals.” Fuck actual criminals though. Bottom line.

There is no bottom line. It’s always seen in history books, the first step of authoritarianism is to take away the rights of prisoners. Once prisoners don’t have rights, then anyone you make a prisoner can’t fight back.
