Literal book burning, except instead of flames, it’s rotting in some landfill

they should just give the books to europe or china. i’m sure they’d put them to better use than incinerating them

They’re planning on digitizing everything thats valuable. I don’t think there’s anything evil about this.

No they’re not, do you know how long it takes to digitize books? I’ve worked at a library, I do. They’re disposing all the ones that aren’t already digitized. And who determines what’s valuable? it’s grounded science, completely subjective to the requirements and needs of a reader. This is destruction of a library. That’s evil. Digital is the death of accountability

Nasa decides whats valuable. I don’t buy the argument that cutting a library from the budget is inherently evil. Is the ultimate moral good to spend the entire federal budget on libraries?

That’s an absurd notion entirely, not even relevant to the issue. They’re not dropping the library because they defunded the library, they’re dropping the library because the entirety of NASA is being budget cut to promote privatized space research. That’s TERRIBLE for researchers who received government benefits and grants and promotes even more ownership from the billionaire class. This is a symptom of a much larger problem. No one at nasa is choosing to do any of this, man.

And besides, the fact that they were being stored in a library at the most prestigious aerospace research facility in this country should be significant enough that they’re valuable. They’re not basic college level books, these are profound pieces of information that shape our understanding of the planet, climate and our place in the universe. It’s an attack on public science research, information accessibility, and corners a foundation point in the science community to a limited and 1/2

2/2 Unreliable digital space that is already showing problems handling the information load
