Y’all really gotta stop with this idea that every opinion is inherently worthy of respect. I can respect a conservative who disagrees about how to improve the economy. I cannot respect conservatives who think immigrants should be treated like animals.
Do those who you disagree with politically deserve respect?

Not to say that this is necessarily your perspective OP, I just usually see these types of questions from people who think that tolerance means entertaining all beliefs, no matter how extreme

Do you think that they deserve respect as a person? Not that you have to respect their opinion, but do you think they deserve respect as a human?

But it’s about respecting the person not the beliefs. Just because someone reposts something or wears a hat, etc. it only gives you a small picture of them. Most people have their own opinions within their parties, their own limits, and have their own complicated reasoning.

People who show nothing but disdain for other human beings don’t deserve my respect, no. It’s a scale though. I think it’s obvious that straight up Nazis don’t deserve to be respected as people. Why should we be expected to respect people who use Nazi rhetoric to dehumanize immigrants?

I’m a bit of an optimist (maybe naively) and I think some of those people can redeem themselves if they genuinely change their behavior and dedicate their lives to making positive change and all that. But someone who is actively trying to harm others has no respect from me. Why should they?

I think maybe it also depends on your idea of respect. I presume that also is a scale. I would think that you wouldn’t respect a straight up Nazi by like holding the door for them or inviting them to have a beer or something. But would you respect their human rights? I would think probably yes right? I don’t wanna assume tho

Definitely a scale. And yeah that’s a good question, I guess it gets a bit harder navigating that part of it. I’d say that people don’t deserve to be tortured or killed just for being hateful bigots. I think human rights should go pretty far there. However if someone can be shown to be directly responsible for other real harms to the people they degrade then maybe they shouldn’t have so many protections

At that point I think it gets more into the area of legal repercussions than my personal morality though

Personally, I don’t think every opinion is worthy of respect, but every person is. At least that’s me coming from a healthcare professional. And I’d hope anyone in any similar field or who deals with people treat people with respect regardless of beliefs. It’s not easy, but people are complex. And being respectful can make a difference – and it doesn’t have to mean compromising your values.

Well first of all I’ll say that for the statements I was making above, that’s all assuming that I have a reasonable understanding of their character and values. I agree that you can’t/shouldn’t make sweeping character judgements based on a reposted meme or a hat. Especially since the majority of trump voters are really just victims who don’t realize that they’re being scammed

As far as healthcare workers go I also agree, but I think that’s what makes those people so heroic. My nurse friends have to put up with genuine trash sometimes but it’s their duty to help everyone and I really commend them for that. I just don’t work in that field so I can afford to be a bit less saintly. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but I can’t say I don’t operate on generalizations. If I see someone with proud boys merch I’m gonna lose some respect for them right off the bat
