TIL what "identity politics" really is:
It is the idea that systems of oppression can be reformed by simply putting people with different "identities" (i.e. marginalized groups, women, etc) into positions of power
And that is false
That’s affirmative action. Identity politics is kind of a higher-level concept that encompasses it I guess

Affirmative action is policy that increases opportunities for marginalized groups. Sort of related but not the point here.
Identity politics is thinking having a minority/queer/woman president/mayor/whatever will magically fix everything, or even fix anything.

I think part of identity politics is the concept that certain characteristics make people more vulnerable to oppression. It doesn’t really say how to solve that

That is a separate aspect of identity politics that I'm not really addressing here, yes
