Gun control advocates always say that manufacturers should be liable for crimes committed with their arms and I genuinely want to know why this is such a widely held belief when no other dangerous object is held to that standard

Dangerous products are held to that standard. You can’t make highly dangerous product at least without an acceptable warning. A gun has no other legitimate purpose but to cause grievous injury and death to living things.

The primary objective is for the gun to be dangerous, it’s a weapon. This isn’t the case for most other dangerous things like cars or kitchen knives

Cars are similarly deadly. They’re required to have airbags. You’re required to wear a seatbelt when driving. You’re required to have a license when driving. And you can get your license revoked for numerous reasons. There are very few similar laws about gun safety. The only reason, as far as I’m aware, is because any law that makes guns safer is seen as an infringement upon the second amendment.

Tbf I don’t think they should be responsible if they sell a gun to a legal buyer who goes and kills someone. They should take greater responsibility than most though given they are supplying weapons to folks who will kill more children than car crashes or cancer in certain years

Shooting is an Olympic sport, sport shooting generally is a huge market and a major legitimate purpose of guns

Kitchen knives are used in murders all the time, likewise people use their cars as weapons all the time

Are you purposely misunderstanding my point? They have primary use cases that aren’t killing or harming people, unlike guns. If you are selling deadly weapons you should be held to a higher legal standard
