As someone who is pretty liberal i genuinely don’t understand why implementing some form of voter id is a bad thing. Like I don’t why if having to show a drivers license or a passport or documents à la I9 verification during registration is a bad idea

I’d be pro-voter ID if every citizen automatically got a free ID card when they turned 18

Like I generally get why requiring say a passport is a bad idea cuz that shits expensive but most people have documentation like a birth certificate and a social security card. There’s a whole host of things you can use to verify when you do an I9 and we have the tech to idk just upload a picture of ur id. Or you could go to the county clerk and they could check you off during voter registration. Like a one time deal

It’s not about the concept of voter id being bad, it’s surrounding arguments. If I’m an American citizen and I show up to vote without an ID, am I out of luck? Do I have to pay for the ID or is one made for me? Where/How do I get the ID? Would it be close or far? Do I have to wait long to get it? These don’t sound like hard questions, but when you start to break down that people who don’t own cars can’t just drive to get one or if they have to pay they might not be able to afford it.

the reason people are anti voter ID is because every implementation so far has been pretty clearly an attempt to make it harder for citizens to vote. they add hoops that don’t need to be there, and they get upset if you propose lowering barriers to entry for people who are for sure citizens

Honestly yeah i don’t think that’s a half bad idea. Ofc some people aren’t gonna go take their picture or whatever but like im not mad my student id is necessary to get me into a building and it kinda seems like the same concept

Like we already do school picture day. Just make it part of high school graduation proceedings

ofc with proper documentation. but I more mean there are ways to absorb that bureaucracy into existing pathways so it doesn’t cost much to implement

I think since high school isn’t mandatory it would have to be an opt in process but tbh if the gov gave you the reasonable chance to get a free id and then you blew it off and proceeded to complain that you can’t vote, I might just say well it sucks to suck
