An ant knows that it exists, an LLM does not.

Do you even know what sentience is?

That’s consciousness, not sentience.

An ant is capable of experience, and an LLM is not. Is that better?

Again that’s consciousness. You’re right that consciousness is more relevant here but that’s not what OP asked. Sentience is marked by feeling. The ability to feel sensations. A sentient creature doesn’t just detect pain, it suffers. Sentience falls within consciousness, which is more the concept of those feelings being unified with a sense of self. AI is not sentient nor conscious.

Is feeling not synonymous with experience? I’m not up to snuff on this stuff but it sounds like we meant the same thing in my second comment so I’d genuinely like to understand better.

Awareness is the most basic tier: information gets registered and influences behavior. A plant bending toward light is aware in a minimal sense. It doesn’t require any inner feeling, just functional responsiveness. Most people mean something richer when they use the word, but at its core, awareness is about detection and reaction, not experience.

Sentience adds felt experience. A sentient being doesn’t just detect pain, it suffers. There is something it is like to be in that state. This is the threshold that matters most ethically, because sentience is what makes harm meaningful. It’s about having experiences, not necessarily reflecting on them or understanding them.

Consciousness goes further still. It typically means experiences are unified into a coherent subject, a sense of being a self who is having them. Some definitions include self-reflection: knowing that you know, noticing that you’re noticing. This is what philosophers call the “hard problem,” because no one has convincingly explained why subjective experience exists at all, even in beings we’re sure have it.

Recent quantum physics suggests that information/consciousness may be fundamental to reality. I doubt AI will ever be able to come close being conscious.

AI doesn’t experience qualia which is what most people really mean when they say “experience”. Qualia is not part of sentience, but consciousness.

This is why I asked OP if they even know what sentience is. Ya know? Since consciousness is much more relevant given it’s what distinguishes us from many species? Idk maybe it’s the tism but I feel like it’s not that complicated

“Consciousness is fundamental to reality”, “ai, though part of reality, isnt conscious” Pick one

Personally im on team panpsychism Ai is conscious and so is everything else What that is like for non-humans is unknowable

It is possible for consciousness to be fundamental to reality (in the sense that it is not emergent, which is what I understood that comment to mean) and still not have all things be conscious. There’s no need to pick one

Qualia is what I was referring to as experience! Thank you for clarifying! The scope of my knowledge on this subject is pretty exclusively in the world of the mind-body problem which is why I pretty much immediately jumped on qualia in my original comments lol

Panpsychism does not mean everything is conscious in the way that humans are conscious. I’m on team quantum information panpsychism as theorized by Federico Faggin, the inventor of the microprocessor. He postulates that consciousness is fundamental since we are the observer, observed, and agent, and our willful observation causes the collapse of the wave function. It means our consciousness exists as a holographic projection which is channeled through our brains like a radio.

That would mean that our bodies are quantum-classical machines and AI is nowhere near that level. AI doesn’t have the capacity for qualia.

Human consciousness is like a thread running through time. There is always something it feels like to be you, even when you are idle or staring at a wall. You have an interior that never fully goes dark. It has texture, mood, and continuity, woven through every moment of your life from the inside.

An LLM is nothing between prompts. Not resting, not waiting, just inert math on a server. Then electricity fires, numbers cascade, output appears, and it goes dark again. There is no witness inside the process, no one home while it runs. It behaves without being.
