Greenland ALREADY has one of the world’s highest suicide rates bruh and that’s without having to deal with our bullshit 💀

I was shocked it’s so much higher than Iceland and other countries in the Arctic circle. It looks like the rate is specifically high in young Inuit adults

Having been to Iceland I think there’s a number of reasons for that. Iceland might as well be New York City compared to Greenland. The settlements are significantly larger, meaning there’s more stuff to do. Greenland, due to its isolation and harsher climate, has higher prices for goods and higher poverty rates.

Greenland doesn’t have as much infrastructure for local affordable food production and doesn’t have as stable an economy. Greenlanders are also having to deal with the disruption of traditional lifestyles, which carries impacts on the older generations from resettled villages. Canadian Inuit communities face a similar issue of suicide rates.

Ah yeah, I did see the same issue with Canadian Inuit. I forgot to mention that. The urban vs rural thing makes sense too. I guess I just assumed the lack of daylight during the winter would be a really big contributor

I’m sure it’s a part of it. I’d be depressed if I lived in the dark for half the year. But Iceland is just such a nice place to live that I think they have just outpaced the negative impact.
