It’s self-governing but owned by Denmark, which gives them free healthcare, free college, and almost $600 million a year in subsidies. Denmark does not have the legal authority to sell it without the consent of the Greenlandic population, who tend to be oriented towards independence even with all the money they get. Why would they want to join the USA? They can’t trust the USA to send them $600 million a year. They would lose free healthcare and free college.

No it’s not that’s not at all how the Danish system works. Greenland isn’t something Denmark can sell at will, it’s an autonomous territory with its own rights under Danish law. Greenland has home rule and its own parliament. Greenland’s prime minister AND denmark’s prime minister both outright said Greenland cannot be bought. It is not within the rights of Denmark to sell it, and Greenlanders want independence, not a new master.

Denmark can technically sell Greenland because it retains ultimate sovereignty over the territory under international law. Self rule does not equal sovereignty. Denmark has done this before with the danish west indies.

Denmark has authority for foreign relations but due to Greenland’s self governing status, does not have the authority to sell it within their own sub-national laws. The Danish West Indies were a colony without their own autonomy or home rule. And even despite this, the sale to the United States was approved by unofficial referendums in both the islands and Denmark proper.

If Greenlanders wanted to join the USA, they would. Greenland, according to the home rule laws, has the authority to hold an independence referendum. It can then voluntarily join the United States. But it won’t. Because they don’t want to. And their autonomy means that they could not be sold without their consent, because they are not something the Danish government can legally sell.

Self governing doesn't matter in this case as denmark can pull the plug on that if they want. Would they maybe not for the right price maybe

“Why doesn’t the government just ignore its own laws in the largest constitutional violation of modern Danish history so they can sell the Greenlandic people to us against their will and against the will of the Danish population.” If Denmark cared about price they wouldn’t be holding onto the territory which costs them 600 million a year. It’s like expecting England to sell Scotland against its will. It’s not happening and it would destroy their government.

Denmark recognized the right to self determination of the Greenlandic people in 2009. Also constitutionally speaking any change to the territory of the Danish realm requires the approval of the Danish parliament. Which they would not do.

78% of Danes oppose the sale of Greenland, as do 85% of Greenlanders, and the Danish prime minister said they would not. Why would MPs commit political suicide (and likely usher in a political crisis) for some amount of money? It’s not like the Faroe Islands would respond well to the self-determination of its counterpart being blatantly violated.
