And obviously they are not totally equal situations so reducing them to that would be disingenuous, but it just feels like reactionary politics are more so in the driver seat than principles at this point

the leftist take in both situations is to believe that colonizer states shouldn't get to deprive native people of land and livelihood

I don’t understand the ancestral clams from either side, it just becomes an arbitrary argument. I think it just makes more sense to analyze it from a modern geopolitical standpoint

The founder of revisionist Zionism, Ze'ev Jhabotinsky, actually made comparisons to the Sioux and Aztecs. He was comparing them to Palestinians when making the argument that “all native peoples resist colonization” and the same would occur in Palestine

Well I’d agree that modern Israel is a colonizer state but I think it’d also be fair to say that there are Jews who were native to that land before they were colonized as well

Yes, Palestine had a significant pre-colonization indigenous population of Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews, and plenty of Ashkenazim moved there before the Israeli state existed and stated forcibly displacing Arabs.

Well even the Ashkenazim can trace their roots back to that land and likely come from a group displaced by the Romans. Which doesn’t excuse the ongoing genocide of Arabs or the other terrible actions of the modern Israeli government of course, but I think it just goes to show that white conservatives tend to be more sympathetic to these ancestral claims to land when it’s white people who get to fuck over anyone else

Yeah. And it’s not even like the ancestral claim stuff hasn’t happened before. The ancestors Japanese left Korea around the same time the Iraqi Jews left Israel. And then the Japanese went on to colonize Korea. Similar thing with the colonization of Liberia by African-Americans.

People who have their ancestry from somewhere can still go on to colonize it later. Settler Colonization is about a power dynamic, not about “did your ancestors live here before theirs”
