No tf they didn’t. They never had the left in the first place. They had two branches of pro-capitalist liberal government that crushed their rebellion and left them beneath the boot of corporate oligarchs. And in the modern era, they abandoned the Democratic Party bc democrats abandoned them with the death of the coal industry.
Not to mention that most older Appalachians are far more insulated from the culture war bullshit than non-Appalachian southerners. We’re isolated, and old as shit, and not tech-savvy in the least. Most common response to transness from older Appalachians is surprise and curiosity— not bigoted bullshit.
Yeah OLD Christian values. Not this new age evangelical malarkey. That has nothing to do with why central Appalachian counties vote red, though. We turned against Dems because they left us for dead. Now we have to vote red because Reps the only party openly willing to keep our cities alive. Don’t like it but that’s the boat we’re in.
Rural southern morons want their government to be run by the “Christian” church. GOP grifters run with that and use it to raise money and convince broke rednecks to vote against their self-interest and support literal blasphemy the entire time. That’s what happens when a state doesn’t invest in education.
Aye. I see your point on a national scale. Outrage still stands when you hear Appalachians self-identifying as redneck rebels, while exclusively referring to southern, confederate rebels. It’s a similar annoyance to seeing West Virginians fly the confederate flag; they don’t understand their own history or what their ancestors actually fought for, thereby using the term as it applies to them incorrectly.
Yep. And my best friend got pulled over in Morgantown for underage drinking and DWI, but the cops let him DRIVE OFF when they learned he was an oil and gas permit agent. Knew he was shit-hammered and straight up told him to be more careful. Keep in mind, he was pulled over for driving on a sidewalk.
I don’t give a fuck what they “wish” for me when they actively support theocratic policies and pedophiles. But I guess that’s what you dumb fucks are used to seeing every fucking Sunday morning. Hypocrite troglodytes too god damn dumb to recognize when you’re being conned and grifted.
I would just be careful judging groups of people by what you see on social media. I implore you go out and at least see those groups you hate first hand. Go to a church or visit a small town. It’ll either further your beliefs or question them. I just hope you find god 🙏 . He’s always there for you even if you don’t believe in him.
I don’t judge based on what I see on social media. I judge based on what I see in real life. I live in the rural south. Fuck you and your willful ignorance. Fuck you and your fairy tale delusion. Fuck your church and every other church. Religion is a cancer to society, and rural Texas is a fucking cesspool of stupidity.
Dawg if you’re going to vote for something, vote for policies that will improve your life, not just against a group because you associate them with people who trashtalk you. I get it, people are annoying. But voting for the sake of owning the opposition has just landed all of us in a deeper and deeper cesspool
If you’re really curious why I voted for him I can tell you. My family own a small ranch . I’ll list them to make it easy 1. EPA rules like WOTUS can turn our ponds and ditches into “federal waters” that require expensive permits. My neighbors who use public land have problems with BLM permits getting tied up in lawsuits under democrats.
But most importantly, estate taxes could force our kids to sell the ranch when we die, since the land is worth a lot on paper but doesn’t make much cash. Trump raised the estate tax exemption, so he feels like the only one trying to keep family ranches from being taken apart by taxes.
Oh I agree it should be made socially unacceptable. But alienation has the opposite, polarizing effect we see today. Shaming chases them deeper into a community where they won’t feel insulted. Speaking from experience, here. Patience, understanding, and education had its effect on me and mine. It can be done for others.
You’re fucked until you realize this isn’t the same boat. Because it isn’t. There are two Americas, and every time you accept their stupidity, you’re ensuring theirs is the one that will be left standing. Have some fucking pride and stop living your life as a god damn doormat. These people “wish you well” but don’t give an actual fuck about you. Stop it.
They may not care about us but they still have a say in how our lives work. Like bro they voted for this administration and now we have to live under it too. I ain’t saying to treat them with undue respect out of principle; it’s a matter of practicality. People don’t listen if they feel disrespected straight out the gate.
I think it will have the exact same result. The difference is that we are not friends. We aren’t colleagues. We aren’t family. You mean literally nothing to me, and your existence is irrelevant to me. Stop being nice to the people in your life who are actually and actively supporting rapist pedophile con-men. Make them choose grifters or you. Make them choose art or the rapists. Make them choose culture or theocracy. Otherwise, they know they can have both. Stop giving it to them; stop enabling.
The “reason” people vote for bigotry is because they think it’s acceptable. By coddling these whiny bitches for years and “turning the other cheek,” people have done nothing but validate that concern while the underlying sentiment has only swelled to a fever pitch. If you are coddling evangelical dipshits, you might as well be one of them.
The “isolate on farms and inbreed” is highkey rooted in some really problematic classist attitudes. A lot of this is more rooted in people’s ideas about Appalachia than the reality. There’s not even many farms to be had around there beyond basic homesteads. It was primarily mining, which is one of the reasons Appalachia was historically a cradle of the union movement. There’s also a long history of progressive folk schools in Appalachia that goes well into the present day.
You’re right about a lot, but you’re missing key pieces. The Appalachian mistrust of higher enforcement came from the fact that the corps, state, and federal government never used their power to uphold the rights of the working class. They are socialist in principle, but they knew that whatever they were required to give wouldn’t be allocated to social support systems— it would just be absorbed by corporate entities.
To be clear, “isolated on farms and inbreed” happened in my local area, like not saying that on stereotypes. My dad’s hometown had a decent bit of it as it was a lot of isolated farmers 💀 there is of course propaganda about communes and other communities but this specific thing has definitely been an issue
