Also Marx did not consider his beliefs to be an ideology, but rather a scientific critique. He referred to ideology as a false consciousness created by the ruling class to maintain economic power.

Marxism isn’t a religion, it’s not “do whatever Marx said”, it’s an ideology built on Marx’s greater ideas. You will never instantly argue a Marxist out of any idea by quoting the opposite idea from Marx. Texts need to be analyzed and the ideas need to be qualified.

It seems to me like Marx’s scientific critique of capitalism has been stripped of all its actual diagnostics and reduced to a vague, amorphous sense of progress that anyone can freely interpret for themselves, even in direct contradiction to previous Marxist ideas.

If you’re talking about more contemporary political movements and ideas like critical theory, feminism, and the civil rights movement being influenced by Marxism, then these ideas are based in the same material analysis that Marx used and are intersectional approaches to the same issues. Could you provide an example of what you mean?

Agreeing with Marx doesn’t make you not a Marxist though; Marxism is an intellectual and literary tradition with variety within it is all. The more reputable and serious branches of that tradition have changed their stance from some of the very earliest writings.

The material analysis of Marx is, well, a materialist methodology. It fundamentally precludes the incorporation of human/natural rights, let alone civil ones.

Intersectionality would be an admirable addition, if it truly remained in the realm of dialectical materialism, but it very clearly has departed into a kind of dialectical idealism.
