The extra steps in bureaucracy required for any of this is not worth whatever potential benefits there are, the paperwork for getting food assistance is enough of a pain as is

someone who has assets like this is probably only transiently between jobs/in a pinch and I don’t think they should have to tear down their lives to eat through a rough spot
if they’re in a more permanent bad financial position they’ll need to sell that shit to get by soon anyway

The key is liquid. Most states do not consider homes, personal property, and clear retirement assets (401k’s) when calculating eligibility, but maybe they should. They’re not liquid, but you can take out loans against them (incl pawning guns)
