Honestly had no clue they still had any territory tbh.

Also I know their justification for this was creating a state reclaiming all former Islamic territory, but it’s funny that they don’t claim most of Spain but do claim almost all of Tibet, Ethiopia, and India, territories that were never fully controlled by Islamic Powers.

It is funny for sure. Not sure if this is accurate about their claims, but it definitely is hilarious that they want all of North Africa, the traditional “Middle East”, Southeastern Europe, India, Tibet, and the Muslim majority part of China

It reminds me of this map some dude made trying to claim the Ottomans controlled Iceland at some point

The original intent of the image was to show the max territory of Ottoman Control, them patrolling Iceland and raiding isn’t controlling it

Nah I know I just imagine that’s where the claim comes from

They also never controlled the entire Arabian peninsula or that much of Ethiopia.

I went to the beach where they landed in the Westman Islands. It’s not much to look at. In Iceland there is a common urban legend that because of these abductions, it was technically legal to kill Turkish people until the early 2000s. This is untrue, as it was actually technically legal to kill Basque people until the early 2000s (in Westfjords province). This was due to separate conflicts with basque whalers

I haven’t been to the Westman islands but I did go to Grindavík just before the recent eruptions. The basque thing is really interesting. Between that, their massive fishing “empire” off Newfoundland in the 1500s, and them being nearly the last non Proto indo European language remaining in Europe, I imagine they have some incredibly unique cultural stories
