Is it a hot take to say we should ban ALL forms of outside money in politics? I don’t think private citizens should be donating to candidates either. No more ads, you need to reach your voting base authentically. Hold events, make promises to our faces

I agree that money in politics has gone too far and should be scaled back dramatically, but political donations are necessary and important. Campaigning costs money, and candidates need to get it from somewhere. If we eliminate donations, candidates will be forced to pay for campaign costs out of pocket, which only the very wealthy will be able to do. This only furthers the class divide in Washington.

Give them a certain, minimal amount of money that is pooled prior to the beginning of the campaign to be used for those things and those things only. No private money should be used whatsoever to ensure there is no manipulation.

It only works if you remove it completely and level the playing field entirely. Campaigning should be done exclusively through debates, rallies, and community outreach. Force them to be accountable to all the people, not just whoevers able to fork up the money.

To hold a rally, you need to rent a venue, hire event workers, and pay for security staff. The average American can’t afford that. There are campaign strategies other than the ones you listed that are authentic and do cost money. Eliminating or heavily reducing corporate donations and capping the amount that an individual can donate are better campaign finance reforms that make politicians more accountable, but we cannot ask candidates to campaign for free.
