I think the gun problem in the US is infinitely harder to solve than any country people point to as an example of how to solve it. Estimates say there are 24m AR15s alone in the US, that’s 1 for every single person in Florida.

The cat is sort of out of the bag here. If we look at firearms of all types, there are 1.5 guns for every person in America, with over 500m in circulation, and in 2024 4m people bought their first guns. It’s a numbers game, and I honestly think the numbers involved are simply too big at this point

In Australia, for example, before their 1996 semi automatics ban, what statistics are available suggest that about 15% of people owned guns. In the UK before 1987, when they banned semi automatic rifles, only 1m rifle and shotgun certificates were issued, against a population of nearly 60m.

I think the first step is to implement things like rifle and shotgun certificates separate from the default “gun ownership” Don’t make it tediously difficult, but just add a barrier where people have to prove competency and purpose for it

It’s both, firearms ownership in the US is estimated at ~34%, but it’s also estimated that 3% of the total US population owns somewhere around 40% of the total number of firearms.
