Had we done Reconstruction harder and longer (giggity), our lives would without a doubt be more comfortable today.

I mean, even if you’re a white person like me who doesn’t have to worry about modern-day racism, assuming that a Gilded Age and subsequent Great Depression would follow a hypothetical more aggressive Reconstruction era, it would have been harder for conservatives to roll back FDR’s New Deal without trading racism to generations of bigoted voters in exchange for increasingly economically predatory reforms.

Lincoln did wanna do pretty aggressive Reconstruction measures, but then he got shot and his Vice President, The Most Racist Man Of All Time, decided “nah we are not doing any of that shit” when he took power

Yeah, Lincoln had appointed Andrew Johnson, a southerner who was loyal to the union and anti-secession, but still with DEEPLY southern politics as a unity ticket thing for after the war ended, not expecting to die and have Johnson actually have any real authority. And then he died, and Andrew Johnson was the fucking worst. Genuinely Bottom 5 Presidents of all time. Down there with Franklin Pierce and Andrew Jackson.

My hypothetical isn’t contingent on the Democratic party’s existence.🙂
