i dont get the china propaganda. are people just in awe at the cool looking cities or do they actually think the country as a whole is a good place to live?

I’d argue china is a better place to live than china haters think, and a worse place to live china lovers think

I think it’s worth mentioning how incredibly competent the Chinese state is at administration. They understand the most valuable resource in a country: people. And they got 1 billion people. The ability of them to facilitate large scale public works is impressive. Of dubious build quality? More than likely. But their state-building project is not an accident and didn’t just happen the last twenty years.

yeah i get that sense. same with the chad xi memes. its crazy how instability in the us makes so many people jump ship and glorify other places unquestioningly

So my point is with propaganda surrounding China, it’s worth examining the historical recurrence in China, as an entity, has always done things at an incredibly different scale for over 2000 years. They sent armies to die in the tens of thousands while Rome was a collection of huts.

China has wild variation in wealth distribution. The poorest parts are way poorer than Mississippi, and the richest are on par with New York or LA.

i dont disagree with that. im mostly talking about what life is like in china for the average person and the authoritarian government. i think the average american would run into a lot of things they dont like if they spent more than a vacation there

Oh for the average Chinese person? I think some of it is blown out of proportion but I also think travel advisories and stories from people who left China are worth taking in and comparing with one another. The average Chinese citizen is probably as beaten down by capitalism as the average American citizen. It’s just that they got trains to go places and I like trains so that’s why I bring them up.

I think there are some incredibly bleak stories related to the one child policy, heavy pollution, and the surveillance state. But I wouldn’t be surprised if aspects of their strengths and weaknesses of being a geopolitical superpower are exaggerated.
