We shouldn’t stop them from speaking by use of law, but I fully support anyone who want to make the world a better place.

Banning a part of speech is a detriment to free speech and a liberal democracy

Banning speech through the government is fundamentally illiberal

Do you really trust the government to decide what counts and what doesn’t count?

I never claimed to be liberal tho? I’m just saying we see trends of hate speech leading to violence against ppl who look like me. So I could careless if it hurts some dudes fee fees if I don’t think he should be allowed to say the n word

And I never said the government should be allowed to ban specific words. If u say the n word to someone and they beat ur ass I don’t think that person should be charged personally because u went out of ur way to antagonize and harass them

Hate speech is still distinct from imminent incitement of violent and has been established by the Supreme Court through numerous cases

The usage of slurs and hate speech against ppl has been shown to lead to an increase of hate crimes against marginalized ppls. We see many a hate crimes perpetrated by ppl who entered far right echo chambers where the usage of slurs are as common as rain in South America

Someone saying they hate a group of people is (and should be) free speech, them going to act on their hatred to commit violence is a premeditated crime and is already largely being prevented through counter terrorism efforts by local law enforcement and the FBI.

Ppl saying and spreading the idea of hating a specific group of ppl is what leads to the crimes in the first place tho…

There is no positive scientific correlation that suggests banning hate speech stops hate crime

This article just says that hate speech is bad, nowhere does it provide any empirical evidence to suggest that banning hate speech stops hate crime. It might help to actually read the article first before you try and use it as a counter argument

I did read the article, it talks about how it needs to be addressed, monitored, and combated…

Anyone can say that hate crime should be combatted, now give me empirical evidence that shows actually banning hate speech stops hate crime

“Since the spread of hateful rhethoric can be an early warning of violence – including atrocity crimes – limiting hate speech could contribute to mitigating its impact. The authors of hate speech should also be held accountable, to end impunity.”

I never said anything about banning anything. I explicitly said if someone beats tf outta u for using slurs that’s on u and they shouldn’t be punished harshly imo. If someone beat tf outta Chud The Builder, I don’t think they should be punished harshly because I don’t believe in freedom of consequences lmfao. Idk why ppl are fighting so hard to use slurs and bigoted language lmao

Social media platforms already ban the usage of hate speech. All online social media forums should ban the usage of hate speech. If it’s harder to find like minded bigots, it’s harder for them to organize. If speech leads to the harm of others not just through hate speech but misinformation it should be banned online

Do what extent does combatting hate crime mean to you then? Any hindrance to free speech based on content is a detriment to a liberal democracy as I originally stated. No app or online website should ever be required to limit any form of speech, but given most online spaces are privately owned entities it’s why we see hateful speech be banned on many sites.

If we look at Germany for example we can clearly see that limiting speech based on content doesn’t actually stop hate motivated violence. I have nothing against private entities banning certain speech, that’s their freedom to do so, but I have a million different reasons why on a federal level we should not limit any form of speech, even hate speech

Banning accounts that are actively spreading misinformation and hate speech. Idk if u belong to any marginalized group, but if u don’t u don’t know what it’s like to be berated in spaces purely for u belonging to a specific group

Great, we’re of agreement then. I don’t ever believe in the government regulating content based speech, but on a private entity level that’s different And as Latino person, it’s best to grow some thicker skin. I’ve experienced racism and one of the biggest pieces of advice is to not let it get to you, that’s what hateful people want. You are morally superior to them at the end of the day

I shouldn’t have to “grow thicker skin.” We as marginalized ppls shouldn’t always have to be the bigger person imo. I hate that we have to be better than literal Nazis. IMO, if someone beats ur ass for being racist, homophobic, transphobic, ect. I’m not gonna like like I care that karma swung their way
