Look I get what people mean when they say this but I think it legitimately ignores the severity poverty in other nations when we act like the USA is on average just the same. Some parts of the USA are similarly poor (like Indian reservations), but on average Americans live much better lives than people in “third world countries” and that’s why people immigrate here. By trying to reframe poverty in America it instead ignores the poverty of other countries.

Is it? It’s a country that flaunts opulence that comes at the expense of billions in medical debt, billions in student loan debt, erosion of civil rights, food insecurity for 1 in 6 Americans, and crumbling infrastructure. All for billionaires to hold onto power because they fear their own mortality.

If it comes from a place of privilege when using a designation for countries where civil unrest and crumbling infrastructure like running water is hard sought, we have those things too. More and more, as the hours tick by.

How privileged of both of us then. Not exactly universal in parts of this country. And given the decline of the Ogallala Aquifer to critical levels by the 2040’s, our water is also at risk.

Now here’s some nuance and meaningful contribution. Thank you. Perhaps silly of me to use the phrase but it’s hyperbole for the contrasting wealth inequality and genuine lapses in basic necessities or infrastructure services within the country.

“Reframing the poverty” is a touchy one that my hyperbole skimmed over. I don’t intend on downplaying the plight of other countries who are dependent on outside food aid and with practically nothing in terms of basic needs met on a regular basis.
