No one here said capitalism was bad yet though? OP made a qualifying claim on what is and what isn’t a leftist, a claim I happen to agree with. I’m not a leftist and have just as much critiques of them as they do capitalism, but this “pure capitalism” and “pure socialism” is just a way to run from arguments.
You’re essentially switching between 2 arguments which are, “capitalism as a real-world political economy” and “capitalism as an idealized free-market model”. That allows you to claim objective good things done under capitalism by your metric while also saying that it’s not “real capitalism” when a real critique is made.
You setup your question as “do you think America is TRULY capitalist”. It is. That’s the only correct answer. The United States is a capitalist country. You don’t get to define it out of existence because of critiques. The same goes for the socialism and the critiques of the USSR. If they have to take it on the chin, so do we.
The irony is that I’m the one treating capitalism like an actual economic system. You’re treating it like a religion. Every success is evidence of its truth, every failure is explained away as heresy. I’m glad you got the “Invisible Hand” handout from The Wealth Of Nations in summer class though. If you need to borrow the book, let me know…I can send you my copy through postage if you’d like.
