I’m actually not so sure about this. Most of the time, the government covering things up or trying to censor them online would just draw even more eyes to it. Like when the government pressured social media platforms to do something about Covid misinformation, it 1. didn’t take long for the secret to get out and 2. only confirmed in the minds of lots of people that something fishy was going on. I think most of the time they’d rather conspiracy theories play out amongst theorists in obscure
