
I agree with #1. Sometimes the methods are illegitimate even if people in the future say your heart was right. He violated the basic social compact and ground rules of democracy. You can't commit sabotage, violence, and insurrection no matter what your cause. At least if the government itself is basically legitimate and redeemable
Violence is illegitimate. The way to change things you consider unjust is through politics. Many other countries abolished slavery without violence. It's easy to look back now and say how evil it was, and it was, but it was an integral part of the economic system of the south. Maybe there are things today people consider unjust. You can't just take up arms against the govt. that's unabomber and militia reasoning
