I agree with #1. Sometimes the methods are illegitimate even if people in the future say your heart was right. He violated the basic social compact and ground rules of democracy. You can't commit sabotage, violence, and insurrection no matter what your cause. At least if the government itself is basically legitimate and redeemable

The social compact and ground rules of democracy in a society that allows slavery deserve to be violated.

It’s crazy how people say “violence is bad, unless they’re wearing suits and are standing behind a podium, then it’s justified and shouldn’t be resisted” 🙄

You’re reasoning falls short. A state that sanctions slavery and oppresses a group of people isn’t a democracy. A democracy gives power and rights to its citizens, and if a society refuses to do so, then it’s literally impossible for you to do it through a “legal process”

Violence is illegitimate. The way to change things you consider unjust is through politics. Many other countries abolished slavery without violence. It's easy to look back now and say how evil it was, and it was, but it was an integral part of the economic system of the south. Maybe there are things today people consider unjust. You can't just take up arms against the govt. that's unabomber and militia reasoning
