The people making fun of voting are then going to go sit on their asses and do nothing

You’re supposed to sit on your hands on do nothing but wait for the “revolution,” as foretold by lenin and marx /s

Nah the one I usually hear is that I am complicit in the crimes of America by voting for harm reduction, as opposed to abstaining (letting trump win) and, I guess, organizing? Starting a communal garden? Talking to your neighbors? Like all great stuff but I don’t see how we can’t do that and also vote for less fascists in office

i do hate the concept of people pushing to vote 3rd party because “both sides are evil” when we know we’re just throwing votes away at that point. i voted for harris in the last election (and i would consider myself pretty “far left”) and even if she sat on her ass and did absolutely nothing her entire presidency it would’ve still been better than what trump has done. it’s frustrating that people think that perfect change can happen overnight.

Exactly! It’s unfortunately one of the most embarrassing oversights I see on the left, almost on par with the anti intellectualism we see everywhere on the right. Any thinking person knows trump is worse for everyone than Kamala but they’re gonna throw away a vote because “they’re both bad”? But they know which one is worse and by how much 😅. So unserious and performative

literally like vote for conditions you can reasonably make a change under. it would’ve been reasonable to go for a democratic socialist after a democratic president for proper and consistent change to happen. but we got magats in office and the next president is going to have to spend so much time unfucking us from this bullshit.

This turns anticolonial critique into a punchline so you don't have to engage with it. The point was never to shame anyone for voting. It's that the system you're voting in was built on dispossession and still runs that way, and you can't change what you won't name. Knowing what you're up against isn't telling anyone to stay home.

Nobody here is saying sit on your hands and wait for a revolution. That's a strawman. Nobody expects change overnight either. It starts with awareness: understanding the system is built to keep power where it already is, so you don't mistake one ballot for the whole fight. Vote. Just don't treat it as the finish line.

That's a false binary. It was never "vote for harm reduction and be complicit" vs. "abstain and let Trump win." The critique is that treating voting as your main moral act lets everything else go unexamined like what we fund, who we work for, how we treat people. And putting "organizing?" in a question mark like it's a joke says a lot. Organizing is how most lasting change in this country has actually happened.

I agree on one thing: voting third party in this system is a wasted vote, arguably worse than abstaining. But calling everyone who critiques the system "unserious and performative" is its own performance. Contempt isn't a strategy. If you want people with you, engage with what they actually said instead of the cartoon version.

Nah I mean not to be snippy but reread my comment bc I didn’t say that. I’ll critique the system all day long as any thinking person should, I was saying that people who sit back and refuse to vote thinking that’ll do something deserve critique. Because their actions directly result in the suffering of real people.

Believe me I’ve talked to contless people with these beliefs and they can never make a clear argument for what is lost by voting. And yes organizing is powerdul, I didn’t mean to downplay it but I can see how my comment would read like that. My point is that many of these people call you an idiot for voting and say that the real strategy is to abstain and organize. My point is that there is no benefit for that strategy when compared to voting AND organizing. There’s no value in abstaining

I’ve always said to vote in addition to other action. Not voting is the issue
