Not even a conservative but I don’t think the expectation of assimilation is necessarily a bad one. You can’t have a country where millions of people with different cultural backgrounds share a lot of vested interests (although we arguably don’t have that right now either) when there’s pockets of like fifth-generation immigrants who refuse to interact with other cultural groups or learn English. Obviously you’re allowed to keep your culture but America shouldn’t be segregated by ethnicity

They don't, they also don't have to immigrate for their comfort. Life is full of little concessions

That being said, I don’t think that’s as common in the US as the political right would want you to believe. We actually do a very good job of this compared to most other countries

For what it’s worth, American culture as a whole has been influenced by our melting pot culture, which is antithetical to the idea of total cultural assimilation

Oh absolutely, total cultural assimilation would be a bad idea. Part of the beauty of America is that everyone comes here and shares their cultures rather than suppressing them. But some level of assimilation, in my opinion, is good and should be expected. Immigrants shouldn’t come here and sequester themselves from the rest of American society
