You can live car free in a few cities and hopefully more in the future Or at least one-car instead of two-cars, biking or transit outside of work, etc based on efficient transit and bike systems

For sure, that’s the kind of place I’d like to live whenever I get the chance to move. I’m just saying that trains can’t and shouldn’t go everywhere, we’re a massive and very rural country that is always going to need a good number of cars. And that’s coming from a dedicated train nerd lmao

Fs, although even in urban places trains don’t make sense below a certain population density and that only really exists in the urban core, not the surrounding counties. Busses are a good middle ground for that but even then some county dwellers will need transport outside of bus routes sometimes, like if they’re traveling to rural areas

And yeah we do have a lot of track but the trouble is that much of it is aging and in need of extensive repair and that scheduling is really infeasable if we try to put public transit on freight lines and expect either to work in a timely manner. Feel like it’s a classic case of ‘we can definitely build a system that works really well but the gov would have to invest in it and they don’t like doing that’

Very cool map tho. I do frequently mourn the fact that my car commutes are connected by rail but there’s no train that can take me between them :(
