The largest US cities when the car was invented (New York, Chicago, Philadelphia) tend to be among the most walkable and already had pretty expansive rail networks when automobiles started becoming popular. So you walked or took trains, trolleys, ferries, carriages, etc. Which all still happen to be pretty popular modes of transport in those cities today (minus carriages probably)
