Those electing number 2; do you know what an Islamist government is?
As an Arab from the Persian Gulf, I’ve seen some interesting opinions about my country and its neighbors, especially from those who’ve never been. What would you prefer in the Arab gulf countries?

Secular and democratically elected with security guarantees from a powerful ally is ideal.

I’d rather have the people have a choice in their government than be forced into any of the others

In the monarchies, we recognize the danger of Islamism and the dangerous effect it has on the youth. It makes them radical and death-culty. I sadly see it among the diaspora a lot (especially north arabs)

So an Islamist regressive government is preferable? One that may censor the internet and regress women’s rights over one that at least has the sheen of liberalism and works towards granting more rights and works towards progress? You prefer one that actively chooses petty sectarianism?

I prefer a monarchy that does things for the people rather than an elected oligarchy with no connection to the land they rule

Fair enough. I honestly don’t see anything wrong with that. The west likes to pretend our democracies actually work for the benefit of regular people, but quite often the exact contrary is true

And the thing is the monarchies are not the same as they are in Europe. Each monarch has an “office hours” where anyone within the emirate can come in and air their grievances

Why couldn’t a democratic Islamist state work towards progress? If it’s a real democracy and it’s the will of the people, it’d get done

Do you know what Islamism is? It’s fundamentally regressive

What about it is fundamentally regressive? Strict adherence to the Quran? Sure, but I see that as no different as strict adherence to the Bible people want here. What’s most important to me is that people have their voices heard. If that’s more possible under a liberal monarchy, then so be it. But I think the nature of a monarchy is fundamentally worse than the nature of an (unflawed) democracy.

Your thinking is that of a European monarchy. Monarchy is I suppose the wrong word for what goes on in the region. A sheikhdom is democratic in its own way. The sheikh is tied to the land; he is raised to lead from birth. His responsibility is to his people only. He holds “office hours” of sort every week for anyone to air out their grievances and it’s his duty to resolve their issues. That is our democracy

A European monarch is tied to the land, raised to lead from birth. Supposedly had a duty to the people, but we saw throughout the 2nd millennium that their attentions were primarily focused on the upper classes and elites These “office hours” were a thing in Europe too.

It’s difficult to explain the differences. The tribal system is different in Arabia. It is both good and bad. I’m sorry I haven’t been very clear.

Nah you’re chilling, I’m sorry I’m not as knowledgeable about how a sheikdom functions

Just tryna explain from the knowledge I have (and what I lack) why I’d support a democracy over monarchy, even if I prefer liberalism to Islamism

The gulf monarchs run slave states and are all billionaires who fly out IG models to be prostitutes for them. The needs of their people are the last of their concerns, too busy raping women and being rich.
